Core Passeroidea is a clade of Passeroidea, containing Peucedramidae, Prunellidae, Estrildid clade and Passerid clade, which also includes the epifamily Icteroidae (Sibley and Ahlquist's original Emberizidae). This group includes familiar species such as the Scarlet Tanager, Common Yellowthroat, Ortolan Bunting, Common Grackle, Baltimore Oriole, Dark-eyed Junco, Eastern Towhee, Snow Bunting, and Canary. It is used to differentiate from the Basal Passeroidea.

Core Passeroidea is the largest clade of Passerida, containing 18 families and over 1,500 species.

Description

This is a highly varied group, including birds as different as cardinals and orioles, little wood warblers and big grackles, plain sparrows and brilliant tanagers.[1]
