The gizzard is the muscular stomach. It is located after the proventriculus (the glandular stomach, or the true stomach) in a bird. A gizzard grinds up food, which is needed as no birds have teeth to chew food. In predators birds, such as owls, this is where undigestible matter is such as fur and bones are separated from the meat, packed together, and expelled out the mouth as a pellet.
