Setting up a taxobox is easy. And I'm not joking either. Yes, there are codes, but doesn't almost everything have rules or codes?

Here's a what an example taxobox looks like, taken from the Crowned Slaty Flycatcher's page. I'm using it as an example, since it has one of the longest binomial names of any bird or vertebrate, for that matter!

Setting it up

All templates start with "{{" and since the template is called taxobox, we'll label it this:

{{taxobox

Now the bird needs a name. We'll now put this underneath "{{taxobox"

| name = Crowned Slaty Flycatcher

Now we need an image, a made-up bird might not have an image, so we'll add "Noimage.svg" to the "|image =".

| image = Crowned Slaty Flycatcher (Griseotyrannus aurantioatrocristatus).jpg

This is optional (it does make it look nicer), but you can add a conservation status to the taxobox. A very rare bird might be CR (critically endangered) while a very common bird will be LC (least concern). If you don't want to bother, add "DD" to the field. DD means it's data deficient. The "status system" will be IUCN3.1. And if you want a reference, put "status_ref =" afterwards. I add in "Future IUCN", hopefully they won't mind.

| status = LC | status_system = IUCN3.1 | status_ref = <ref>BirdLife International 2009. Empidonomus aurantioatrocristatus. In: IUCN 2011. IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Version 2011.1. <www.iucnredlist.org>. Downloaded on 25 October 2011.</ref>

Whoops! It look like IUCN uses its synonym. That's all right, at least it links to its status page.

Next few steps.

We should know that all birds are animals. So we'll label it this:

| regnum = Animalia

Birds are born with a notochord while an embryo, so they are in Chordata.

| phylo = Chordata

Birds have feathers, lay eggs, have a horny beak, bipedal (walk on two legs) and are endothermic (warm-blooded). Therefore, they are in Aves.

| classis = Aves

Uh-oh! So now we're stuck, because we don't know what order it is in. This is where I come into help.

The flycatcher is in Passeriformes, a perching bird. They have four-toed feet with three toes facing forward and one back with all four toes on the same level [2] [3] [4]. They make up the largest order, about 59 families and about 5,100 species [4]

| order = Passeriformes

Uh-oh, you need help again, right? Well no fear! Let's look at its characteristics.

First, this bird sits upright and has strong bristles around its bill, and sallies forth to snap up insects [2] [5] and is aggressive [3]. It is a strictly American family [6] [2]. We place it in Tyrannidae.

| familia = Tyrannidae

Now we add the genus. Griseotyrannus is monotypic.

| genus = Griseotyrannus

The genus authority is optional.

| genus_authority = W.E Lanyon, 1984

Now we add the species.

| species = G. aurantioatrocristatus

Now we add the binomial, the bird's full scientific name.

| binomial = Griseotyrannus aurantioatrocristatus

This is optional, but if you want to add a made-up bird, George Travis names a lot of the birds found in Devonshire.

| binomial_authority = (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)

Synonyms or subspecies is optional, but makes it look nice when some people look at older books and see that the name is outdated. This sucks, I guarantee it.

All templates end with "}}"

}}

A finished taxobox should look something like this:

{{Taxobox
| name = Crowned Slaty Flycatcher
| image = Crowned Slaty Flycatcher (Griseotyrannus aurantioatrocristatus).jpg
| status = LC | status_system = IUCN3.1
