Flare and after-flare prominence

An explosive eruption on the sun reaching temperatures of millions of degrees.

They are usually followed by what is known as a coronal mass ejection or a CME, essentialy a massive outburst of charged particles from the sun which, when they hit the earth can cause blackouts and interfere with various electronic devices.

Note that a flare is not a prominence [1].
